No backwards steps in Brazilian mental health reform!
In December 2015, the Minister of Health, Mr. Marcelo Castro, announced the replacement of the mental health national coordinator, Dr. Roberto Tykanori, by Mr. Valencius Wurch, the ex-director in the 1990’s of one of the most terrible psychiatric hospitals of Brazil. Mr. Valencius Wurch does not represent the Brazilian mental health reform. He was an opponent of Brazilian Mental Health Law, affirming that taking people out of mental hospitals was something merely "ideological".
Since the announcement different stakeholders, are requesting the resignation of Mr. Valencius Wurch. They believe that only someone aligned with the principles of psychiatric reform, with a history of defense and practice in community-based mental health service and with technical capacity could be the coordinator of Brazilian mental health. That is why several actions are taking place.
