Truth versus myth on mental illness, suicide, and crime
Last week, the UK’s best-selling newspaper, The Sun, chose to put “1,200 killed by mental patients” on its front page, with the number outlined in blood red. “Shock 10-year toll exposes care crisis” was at the bottom of the page. With daily circulation fi gures of more than 2 million, and with the largest combined print and online readership of all UK newspapers, The Sun’s infl uence is substantial. What a pity, therefore, that the headline “People with mental illness more likely to be victims of crime” was not chosen.
